Drumbride Church
Half a century or so after the first flowering of the new Christian teaching we find that an abbey and church are said to have been erected at Drumbride by St. Brigid. A portion of the old church still remains, situated on a lofty hill about two miles north of Drumconrath [see Larkin’s map of 1812]
Lying about 30 perches north of the church there is a flagstone called ‘Leac na nGlún’ -‘the flag of the knees’. . It has hollows in its surface which are said to have been made by St. Brigid’s knees as she knelt in prayer. Stations were formerly made from Colmcille’s well to the old Church of Drumbride. The cemetery here was a favourite place of interment with the people of the neighbourhood but is
seldom used at present. On the first Sunday of June, however, local people now gather in this cemetery for the Blessing of the Graves.
