• Rev. John Rooney (1886-1911) was born at Athlumney (then Parish of Johnstown) in October
1829. He studied at St. Finian’s Seminary in Navan and entered Maynooth in August 1850. He was
ordained by Dr. Cantwell (Bishop of Meath) on 10th August 1857 and during the next decade he was
attached to the teaching staff of All Hallows. On his return to the diocese he officiated as curate in
Kilcormac, Rathkenny and Kinnegad. Fr. Rooney was appointed Parish Priest of Drumconrath in November 1886. He died on 17 April 1911 and is buried in the cemetery (acquired by him) in Drumconrath.
